Northville-Placid Trail

Some people take a week of vacation from work to relax around the house, sleep in, partake in a Walking Dead marathon.  Not us.  We will be embarking on a 130 mile trek through the most remote part of the Adirondack Wilderness.  The Northville-Placid Trail stretches from the southern border of the Adirondacks in Northville, NY  to Lake Placid, NY at the northern edge. We plan to thru hike the NPT starting Saturday.

We aren’t experienced backpackers.  We’ve been backpacking with groups exactly twice in our lives, both times this year for long weekends.  This will be our first backpacking trip by ourselves.  And certainly the first time we’ve put in these kinds of miles.

We’ve been talking about this trip for almost a year.  Real planning started in the past month or two.  Food is a large part of the planning.  Joe made our own dehydrated food for the trip.  No prepackaged, prepared dinners for us.  We’ve got real veggies, meat, tomato sauce and rice.  Its all parceled out and ready to be submersed in boiling water on the trail.  We’ve also got Muscle Milk for potassium, Clif Bars for Protein, oatmeal for a hot breakfast.

Dehydrated spaghetti sauce. It is like a giant fruit rollup.

I’ve been left to plotting the route out on our GPS.  This is humorous because I am barely capable of navigating down a straight path.  We’ll see how I did soon.  We are hoping for a seven night trip but planning for nine.

When people ask why my usual response is “because I can”. Or some days “to see if I can”.

Stay tuned.
